For the inaugural Velocity Tour, a 500-mile road rally through California’s picturesque wine country, I was lucky enough to pilot the silver 21C VMax. This experience provided a rare insight into the luxury and comfort of the Czinger platform while maintaining a connection to the high-performance ethos of the original 21C. The Inception: Entering the Realm of the 21C VMax The journey into the world of Czinger begins with an entry experience unlike any other in the hypercar market. When you enter the 21C VMax, you are not just getting into a car; you are entering a cockpit. The cabin is often described as feeling like a jet fighter, a comparison that becomes immediately clear when you sit inside. With glass positioned less than a foot away from either side of your head, the visibility is truly exceptional. The perspective from the driver’s seat offers a panoramic view that is both exhilarating and immersive. However, this immersion comes at the cost of convenience. The process of getting in and out of the 21C VMax is admittedly ridiculous. You have to sit on the massive sill, pull your knees up close to your chest, spin your body on your buttocks, and tuck your feet into the narrow footwell. Once settled, you slide your head under the carbon fiber roof. It’s a contortionist act, but it’s also a visceral experience that reinforces the unique, aerospace-inspired design of the car.
The reason for the large sills is not merely an aesthetic choice; it’s a necessity. They are stuffed with batteries, making the 21C VMax a plug-in hybrid hypercar. Each sill houses 2.2-kWh of battery power, totaling 4.4 kWh. Unlike many other hybrid vehicles, the 21C VMax does not require plugging in. A motor powered by the mid-mounted V-8 engine keeps the pack charged. This hybrid setup allows the front axle to receive up to 500 horsepower from the electric motors, complementing the 750 horsepower generated by the twin-turbo V-8 engine. For those seeking maximum performance, the car can also accommodate 100-octane race fuel, increasing the horsepower to 850. The engine is optimized to run on ethanol, a renewable and sustainable fuel source that can also produce even greater power output, though Czinger has not yet released official figures for this configuration. The gas engine is mated to an Xtrac single-clutch automated semi-sequential gearbox. This transmission is similar to the seven-speed Xtrac transmission found in the Pagani Utopia, but Czinger takes it a step further. Using its advanced 3D-printing technology, Czinger not only manufactures the transmission case but also incorporates small 48-volt electric motors to facilitate quicker shifts at lower speeds. This unique approach eliminates the jerky, surging feeling that plagues most automated single-clutch gearboxes at low speeds. The twin-barrel actuators work seamlessly, ensuring smooth, decisive shifts even during city driving or parking maneuvers. While this is acceptable for a track-only car like the standard 21C, it is an oversight for a road car like the VMax. The cabin can become noisy during long drives, with the sound of the engine and the road often overpowering the conversation. While performance enthusiasts might appreciate the connection to the machine, some might find it annoying for everyday driving. However, considering the extreme lightweight design, a small amount of sound deadening would not significantly impact performance but would greatly enhance the overall driving experience. The Experience of Driving the 21C Driving the 21C VMax is an experience unlike any other. The unique central driving position places the driver between two passenger seats, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared adventure with a companion. The forward visibility from the driver’s seat is exceptional, offering a wide, panoramic view of the road ahead. This is one of the few hypercars where the passenger seat offers a slightly better view, especially for sightseeing. The steering is responsive and direct, and the car corners with incredible poise. However, the sheer power of the 21C VMax is the most striking aspect of the driving experience. The car accelerates so quickly that it feels like it’s bending the road rather than rolling over it. While I’ve experienced similar power from EVs, the 21C VMax offers a more visceral, raw feel. The rapid acceleration and powerful braking demands constant attention and respect, making it a true driver’s car for those who appreciate the challenge of taming such a beast. Czinger claims a vehicle weight of approximately 3,600 pounds, which is incredibly light for a 1,250-horsepower hybrid. To put this into perspective, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Asseto Fiorano, a three-motor twin-turbo V-8 PHEV that makes 986 horsepower, weighs 3,839 pounds. The Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor twin-turbo V-8 (which makes less power but still highlights the comparison) weighs 4,185 pounds
