For years, we’ve followed the extraordinary evolution of Czinger, a Southern California company that challenges the very definition of a hypercar. The announcement of the Czinger 21C VMax sparked immediate curiosity. Not just another track weapon, this variant promised a road-biased experience of their 1,250-horsepower marvel. To truly understand this machine, we embarked on a three-day, 500-mile road rally through California’s iconic wine country. While the lap times and track records are impressive, the real story lies in what this 3D-printed, carbon-fiber enigma feels like when tested against the practical reality of public roads. Factory Fresh: Stepping into the Future Before even sitting inside, the Czinger experience distinguishes itself. The parent company, Divergent Technologies, operates at a nexus of advanced manufacturing and defense contracting. Entering their headquarters required a U.S. passport, a stark reminder that we were stepping into a facility supplying military contractors. Inside, we were granted access to the production floor, a scene that felt lifted from a sci-fi film. Lukas Czinger, the CEO and visionary behind the brand, guided us through rows of massive 3D printers. These machines selectively sinter powdered aluminum, creating aerospace-grade components that resemble lightweight bird bones. It’s a paradigm shift in automotive manufacturing, where the traditional tooling shed is replaced by algorithms and additive manufacturing. Lukas explains that Divergent’s technology operates at “Pareto optimality”—the point where any addition or subtraction of a gram degrades performance. Consider the process of creating a suspension reservoir bracket. The engineers define the available space and the necessary load resistance. Using this target, the software iterates through hundreds of thousands of design iterations, finding the structurally perfect shape. It’s automotive evolution compressed into hours rather than centuries. Beyond the DOD, nine automotive OEMs utilize Divergent’s capabilities, including Aston Martin (DBR22 Roadster), Bugatti (Tourbillon), and McLaren (W1), with the Ferrari F80 also strongly suspected of using their components. This revolutionary approach is what defines the Czinger experience. Under the Carbon Fiber: Architecture of the Alien Czinger produces two distinct models based on the same fundamental platform: the high-downforce, track-focused 21C (named for the 21st century) and the 21C VMax, a more aerodynamically refined, long-tailed variant. For the inaugural Velocity Tour, a 500-mile rally spanning Central and Northern California’s wine region, I found myself at the helm of a silver VMax. The term “piloting” is used intentionally. The cabin feels less like a traditional car interior and more like a jet fighter canopy. While I have never piloted a fighter jet, I have ridden in an Extra 330LT stunt plane, and the similarity is uncanny. Imagine glass less than a foot from either side of your head, providing unparalleled situational awareness. The ease of entry, however, is intentionally challenging. You place your legs out along the massive side sill, pull your knees up and rotate your body on your posterior, then tuck your feet into the footwell, sliding your head under the roofline. One reason for the large sills is the integration of batteries. The 21C VMax is a hybrid hypercar, with each sill containing a 2.2-kWh battery pack (4.4-kWh total). It is not a plug-in hybrid; the mid-mounted V-8 engine maintains the battery charge. These batteries supply 500 horsepower to the front axle, which utilizes one motor per wheel. The combustion element is a Czinger-developed 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 rated at 750 horsepower on standard 91-octane California premium unleaded. Using 100-octane race fuel increases horsepower to 850. The compact but powerful engine is also optimized for ethanol, promising even greater power output, though specific figures have not been released (industry predictions suggest a 10 percent increase). The gasoline engine powers the rear wheels through an Xtrac seven-speed automated single-clutch sequential gearbox. Similar to the Xtrac unit used in the Pagani Utopia, Czinger not only 3D-prints the transmission case but also employs small 48-volt electric motors to smooth out low-speed shifts. This innovation effectively eliminates the lurching sensation typical of other automated single-clutch transmissions in urban environments. The dual-barrel actuators perform as promised, making navigating gas stations, restaurants, and hotel parking lots feel almost normal. It’s a remarkable engineering achievement that transforms daily usability.
Track Time: The Unsettling Speed What never felt entirely normal was the presence of a professional driver sitting directly behind me for the entire first day. As is customary with high-end hypercars from Bugatti and Pagani, Czinger placed a professional driver, Evan Jacobs, in the car to ensure I didn’t drive the $2.5 million machine off a cliff. Thankfully, Jacobs later assured the Czinger team that I posed no threat and was permitted to drive solo for the remainder of the rally. We stopped by Laguna Seca for some parade laps, but non-Czinger employees are not permitted to drive the VMax on racetracks, even at the sedate pace required for rally participants. However, as I have learned the hard way, when you can’t drive, ride shotgun. I scrambled into the peculiar rear seat. The first thing to note is that this position is not ideal for those with large calves or feet. My XXL calves were literally wedged between the carbon-fiber tub and the seat, and my feet had limited space. However, the side visibility is phenomenal. Reminiscent of a stunt plane, it’s a novel way to experience a racetrack—a circuit I have now traversed more than 1,000 times. This novelty became particularly apparent when Jacobs and I convinced the Skip Barber Racing School staff (whose track day we happened to crash) to let him take the VMax for a couple of “6/10ths” hot laps. The most intense ride-along I have ever experienced was in an Aston Martin Valkyrie LMH race car, where I felt my blood pooling in my extremities under hard braking. The Czinger VMax now sits in second place, and remember, Jacobs was holding back significantly. Even at reduced speed and without the aggressive aerodynamics of the track-focused 21C, it was easy to understand how the brand achieved its “California Gold Rush.” This campaign involved setting five production car track records—at Thunder Hill, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Willow Springs, and the Thermal Club—in just five days, while driving between each circuit. Czinger later returned to Laguna Seca to not only break its own record but to reclaim the throne from a track-special Koenigsegg Jesko Sadair’s Spear. That lap time, a blistering 1 minute, 22.30 seconds, is faster than the fastest MotoAmerica Superbike lap ever recorded at Laguna, a 1:22.56. Czinger claims a vehicle weight of approximately 3,600 pounds—remarkably light for a 1,250-horsepower hybrid hypercar. For context, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale Assetto Fiorano, the highest-performance version of a three-motor twin-turbo V-8 PHEV with less power (986 hp), weighs 3,839 pounds. The new Lamborghini Temerario, another three-motor, twin-turbo V-8 that produces less power but serves as a useful comparison, exceeds two tons at 4,185 pounds. At this point, it is worth noting that the SF90 and Temerario hold records as the quickest gasoline-powered cars MotorTrend has ever tested (the Ferrari for 0–60 mph and the Lamborghini for the quarter mile). If Czinger’s weight claim holds true, this unconventional Southern California startup has managed to outperform two Italian legends in its debut. This is remarkable on its own, but even more so considering that Los Angeles, while known for many things, is not exactly Modena when it comes to supercar manufacturing expertise. On the Road: Navigating the Urban Jungle The chosen route for the rally consisted primarily of genuine back roads. Tight, winding, and often poorly maintained asphalt—hardly the ideal canvas for a hypercar dream trip. We spent considerable time following the pack, navigating to lunch and coffee stops, and moving with the camera car. While perhaps disappointing at the time, this experience provides a realistic perspective of how most owners will actually live with a Czinger.
To my surprise, the VMax behaved much like any other high-end hyper-exotic. Take everything out of your pockets, as the seats are tight. Drink your water before getting in, as there are no cupholders. Prepare yourself for the scrutiny of the road: virtually everyone, especially males aged 16–24, will stare, follow, wave, and rev their engines in approval, all while probably shouting friendly obscenities. Regardless, the Czinger rides better than I anticipated. The team deserves applause for not making it overly stiff. The air conditioning works well. My only complaint about the “normal driving” aspect is the cabin noise. This isn’t the unique V-8 soundtrack, but rather a complete lack of sound deadening. This is excellent for a track car like the 21C but a noticeable oversight on a road car like the VMax. It becomes especially apparent during extended drives. Weight is the
